Once you have learned how to use an autoresponder, it is time to learn how to get your email marketing started. One thing that you can do repeatedly for your customers is find out what they are looking for before you even have a product to offer to them. If you ask your customers what they want you will have a ready-made base to offer your products to of people who have already told you what they would like to have. This is where the survey comes in.

Creating a survey is a good thing for an email marketer to do periodically to find out what their customers are thinking. They can give you valuable information. The first thing you want to do is encourage your customers to fill out your survey. You can do this by offering a free gift as an incentive. You will also need to keep your surveys short, no more than 20 questions, otherwise your customers will become fed up and leave your survey. Clearly state that you will not use their names in the results of your surveys; this will further encourage your customers to fill out your survey knowing that their personal information will not be used for anything. To encourage participation the survey should also be easy to fill out. Yes and no questions are good as well as multiple choices with the answers written for the survey taker. When you would like to offer your customers a chance to add any thoughts they may have, you can add space for comments. Following these steps should help you create a short and simple survey that will be answered willingly.

How do you begin to send out surveys to people? This is another thing that can be automated so that you do not have to set it up yourself and physically send out surveys whenever you need to find out what your customers are thinking. When you use an online company for your survey campaign, you will send an email to your customers inviting them to click on the link in the email that will send them to the survey. You will then receive the answers in your inbox. This can be done very inexpensively with companies on the internet. One of these companies is called Survey Console which has the option of a free account that will give you a limited amount (2) of surveys to send out. There are two choices if you decide to purchase a paid account; the Web Professional will cost $15.00 per month and the Corporate Edition will cost $99.00 per month.

Sending out surveys and discovering what people are looking for and thinking about can be an easy thing to do. Follow the steps in this article and you can become a survey marketer who does research before marketing and producing a product. This can lead to many more sales than you ever imagined.

In the last post we introduced the concept of the opt-in email list. Enacting the opt-in will require an autoresponder which will automatically receive the name and email address from your prospects and send the first email with a confirmation link. In this post we will explore everything you need to know about the autoresponder and how to make it work for you.

The autoresponder can make running your email campaign a lot easier than if you tried to do everything yourself. Before we go into how this works, let’s look into what an autoresponder does. You may have come in contact with the autoresponder before. If you have ever typed your name and email address into someone’s sign up form and were directed to your email to click on a confirmation link, you have been introduced to an autoresponder. After you clicked enter on the sign-up form the autoresponder was the entity that sent the first message to your inbox. When you go to your email to click the confirmation link to give them permission to send you an email newsletter, for example, you will send it back to the autoresponder.

A further convenience of the autoresponder is being able to program it send out emails on a set schedule. In our example of the newsletter you may have signed up for, the email marketer set the autoresponder to send new editions of the newsletter at specific dates. Suppose you are to receive a new edition of the newsletter four times a month. The autoresponder can be set to send out the newsletter every Monday. All the email marketer has to do is program the autoresponder with the date for each newsletter and leave the autoresponder to send them out. No further participation is required. Every Monday your newsletter shows up in your inbox because of the autoresponder.

With the last post helping you to grow your list and this post teaching you about how to use an autoresponder, you should be able to begin an effective email marketing campaign. The list that you will continuously build will be the list that you can market to repeatedly with the help of your autoresponder. This strategy has shown great success for email marketers, so if you can begin with a sign-up form and begin setting up your autoresponder you may experience similar success.

To begin an email marketing campaign, you are going to need a list of names and email addresses. This will be a list that you promote to over and over again. Hopefully, these people will buy from you over and over again and remain loyal customers. This is the best case scenario for a beginning email marketer.

How do you build an email list? There are different ways to do this. One way is to buy a list of names from an online company and it can cost you various amounts of money, but it may not be worth the effort. When you buy a list of names to market to with your products you can buy such a large list that you may do well selling your products. But, this list will not be targeted toward your particular products. It would amount to working harder than you need to with this large list because this list of names has not been introduced to your brand of products. You will need to start at the beginning explaining about your products and not everyone on your list will be interested in what you are promoting.

To prevent owning a list of 500,000 names of people who are not necessarily interested in your products, you must refrain from buying your list from one of the many online companies that sell email lists. Following this advice will give you a targeted list that you build yourself, with fewer names of people who actually would like to receive the information that you will be sending them through email. Some people on this list will buy products from you. This experience will encourage them to buy other products and maybe give you testimonials, further building up your credibility. Having a smaller list in the beginning will help you to manage your list better than the large lists you can buy and you will become more trustworthy to these fewer people.

To build your list you will want them to enter their names and email addresses into your database. You can offer them a place to do this on your website. A good idea is to make it an opt-in process. With the opt-in email your prospects enter their names and email addresses and an email is sent to their email address. They must click on the link provided to confirm their permission for you to send them email. You must have come across this tactic before; it is very common and a great tactic that will lower the possibility of being accused of spamming your prospects. Be sure to have something valuable to offer your prospects, such as a newsletter and coupons for a percentage off of your products. There must be a good reason to join your list.

Building your own list by offering an opt-in form on your website will take you some time, but it will be a much more valuable list than if you bought it from someone because you will have a list of people who are truly interested in your products.

Now that you have decided to begin an email marketing campaign, where do you begin? The first thing would be to decide what type of email you would like to send to your customers. Typically for business, email marketers choose to create newsletters to send out on a regular schedule. This newsletter will be about your business and will give you the chance to present yourself to your customers as highly knowledgeable on your subject. This fact can benefit you greatly since showing yourself to be knowledgeable will increase the trust your customers have in you.

Email newsletters can be sent to your list as often as you like. The drawback to waiting too long to send a newsletter would be that your customers may forget that they signed up for your newsletter and when they receive it, maybe a month later, they may believe it’s spam and delete it and/or click on your unsubscribe link. If they decide to report your email as spam you will have even more unfortunate issues to deal with so you will want to prevent this from happening. Sending your email newsletters at least every two weeks can reduce the possibility of this happening, but sending them once or twice a week if you can manage may be better. At the same time, you do not want to annoy your customers with too many newsletters, so take careful consideration when deciding what would be best for your customers based on this information.

Your newsletter should be valuable to your customers. The way to create this type of newsletter is to impart valuable information; information that would be difficult for them to come across on their own by, for example, searching on the internet. The World Wide Web is a huge place and when you are looking for information and search on a search engine; sometimes millions of websites appear ready to answer your questions. Which one has the best answer for your particular situation? It may take you a while to find out. In this situation you can be of great help to your customers. Create a newsletter that will answer every question under the sun or a newsletter that will expand the subject and teach them even more than they thought about learning would be an excellent strategy. Your customers will look forward to receiving your email newsletters if you provide them with this type of extensive information.

This is a good beginning for the new email marketer. Determine the type of email would be most appropriate and how often to send it and you will keep your customers interested in what you have to say.

There is a debate going on as to whether or not email marketing is dead. Whatever you have heard about this, it may be worthwhile to try an email marketing campaign because those who have been successful with this type of marketing have succeeded greatly. The trick is to do it right and that is where this blog comes in.

The first tip will seem a little obvious but it can be something that marketers overlook. The sign-up form for your web page must be in an obvious place where people will see it. If it is off to the side or at the bottom of the page it can be overlooked. Placing it in the middle of the page in a conspicuous place will be the best bet for your sign-up form.

We have all seen the messages that assure us that our information will not be sold, rented or given to anyone for any reason. This is the type of thing that you will have to include in your sign-up form. It will encourage people to join your email list if they are told that you will not have to worry about your information being compromised.

To make it desirable to receive your email newsletters, you can show them an example of your work. It is important to let the customer know exactly what they will be receiving in their email inboxes when they subscribe to your newsletter. It will cut down on those who unsubscribe, if they discover that they are not receiving what they believed they would receive. They will know exactly what they are going to get and how often they will get it. Give them as much information as you can.

You may be thinking that there is not enough space on your website to supply all this information. That is true. There is a simple solution to this problem. Have a link to subscribe to your email list that takes them to a page where you can show them everything you want to show them. You can ask for information, not too much at first; you don’t want to scare them away. This is also a place where you can ask them a few questions such as what they are looking for, what type of business they have, etc. This is a place to take a little time to get to know a little about your prospective customers. You can continue this activity during your email campaign.

Doing email marketing right and periodically doing maintenance to make sure you are giving your customers what they are looking for will put you on the road to succeeding at email marketing. It is possible to win with this type of marketing.

Email marketing can be a great tool for expanding your business. It would be advantageous to develop an email list to market to over and over again, with their permission of course. It can leave you with a steady stream of customers as long as you are in business. This email list can serve more than one purpose. As well as being a constant customer base, your email list is also available to be a test market. Through them you can send surveys periodically and ask them what they are looking for so you can provide it for them. This is a great option for any internet marketer.

What worries some people who are considering beginning an email campaign is being accused of spamming people. Spam is unsolicited email when those people did not consent to receive email from you. If you do this, you can get into a lot of trouble you will not want to be in. The people you send unsolicited email to can complain to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). The result may be that you lose your email account; all the money you spent or all the hard work you may have done to build an email list will have been wasted. Your Internet Protocol (IP) address and/or domain names will be recorded and placed on a list, called a blacklist. Once you are on this blacklist you will be prevented from sending email from these sources. Email marketing will be over for you.

There are things that you can do to prevent the above from happening. Actually, there are things you should not do and you will be less likely to be accused of spamming your list. The first thing you should not do is rent an email list. Sending an email to a list of people and asking them to join your list is better than sending out a completely unsolicited email, but it can be considered spam, even though you are asking them for permission to send them email; the first email asking permission is still an unsolicited email. The best thing is to have an opt-in list. With an opt-in option, people can enter their names and email addresses into your sign-up form which will be sent to you. An email is sent automatically to them from your autoresponder requiring them to click a link subscribing them to your email list. If everyone does this, you cannot be accused of spamming them. Further helping you stay off blacklists is to have an unsubscribe link in every email; it is a requirement. Following these rules can keep you off of blacklists and keep you earning money from your email list.

SPAM. It’s such a hated concept that there are laws against it. Spam, generally, means that an entity has sent mass mailings to the inboxes of people who have not requested to be on that person’s mailing list. ISPs have spam filters which will scan an email for particular charge words. Money is a good example of a word that the spam filters will send to their junk folders. If your email contains the word money, the spam filter bets that your email is one of the many solicitations for business opportunities that were not permission-based. By the way, opportunity is another one of those words to stay away from. Your email may be permitted to be sent to your clients, but because you have those words in it, it loses its ability to be read.

The answer to this problem is computer software. Software exists that will help you identify words that are targeted as words contained in spam emails. The software will add characters to your email that will allow them to pass by the spam filters. Your emails also need to be formatted properly in order to get past the spam filters. Software can help you with this, too. It will give you the ability to send emails to prospects asking them to opt-in and can give you the all-important unsubscribe link.

Bulk email marketing can present difficulties for those who would like to send mail to hundreds of thousands of email clients. There are companies that can help you do this and help your emails pass the spam filters. Some companies even suggest that they can send 70 million emails without ever being accused of spamming! If you would like to take a chance with these companies you are free to do so, but it may end up causing more headaches than celebrations. Starting out with the small list you have and doing it right as described in this blog, you may be less likely to be put on a blacklist.

You can do this all yourself. You can use software that helps you create emails that are not targeted as spam and there is also software that will help you send out and manage a large number of emails. With this type of software there is a one-time payment which eliminates the need to pay monthly fees to email marketing companies. You may not have 70 million emails to send in a month, but it is better to be safe than to think you will have millions of customers to mail to and then end up being blacklisted.

The last post explained about spamming and being on the blacklist. This can be devastating to your business if it happens to you. You can take precautions against being accused of spam, but it doesn’t always work; you can still be accused of spamming. This may be an unfair accusation as you have followed all the rules, but still have someone complain. This may happen because a second user of a shared computer may see your email and believe that it was unsolicited. These types of complaints may be limited in number and it is less likely that you will be blacklisted because of these misunderstandings. It may be that you are currently on a blacklist like the one described above, but you would like to begin an email marketing campaign. All hope is not lost. You can end up on the whitelist where your IP address and/or domain are considered safe and your emails will not be blocked.

If you are not sure whether or not your email or domain is blacklisted, you can check on this on several different websites. After you find out you are blacklisted, it would be a good idea to find out what the CAN-SPAM laws say you cannot do with email. This will make clear what you should unequivocally not be doing.

You may need to be whitelisted with AOL and Yahoo. Both these companies have rules for you to follow when sending email such as sending email only from your own IP address. Follow these rules and you will be whitelisted with not just AOL and Yahoo, but also with Netscape, MSN and Compuserve. Hotmail will be a little more difficult and costly. Hotmail requires an application fee, license fee and a bond fee. This will require nearly $4,000.00, but this is for the privilege of sending 500,000 emails per month. If you have a need to send out that many or more emails each month, it will be advantageous to you and your business to spend the money it requires to become whitelisted. Anyone with a more modest email list will not have to be concerned at this time with following these suggestions.

To begin the process of becoming whitelisted, you will need to sign up with the various entities that you would like to whitelist your domain and/or IP address. There may be applications to fill out and a process to weed through before you are approved. For a list of less than 100, you will not have to worry about any of these steps. When you grow to 150 names, you can begin with Yahoo and AOL and build up from there. Anyone with 500,000+ names will have to follow the suggestions in the Whitelist Report, a guide that will help you do everything you need to do to become whitelisted.

It must be easy to unsubscribe to your email list to avoid being accused of spamming your list. For new members who enthusiastically signed up for your email list, this may not be a problem. But for older customers there may be an issue of a rising number of unsubscribers. This can be avoided. Consider what your customers are giving up. They may only want to stop receiving your emails, but they may continue to enjoy your products and services. In this case you can give a link to your website in the email and the customer can go straight to the website without having to bother with the email. Coupons placed inside the email may be a welcome sight for these customers, also.

The customer may think that you send too many emails to them and opt to unsubscribe. An option in this case is to have a page where they can opt to decrease the frequency of the emails they receive. The unsubscribe link would send them to this page and if they are determined to unsubscribe they can, but they will also have the option to agree to receive your emails once a month, once every two months, etc. Being flexible in this area that gives your customers the ability to control the email they receive will cause fewer people to completely unsubscribe from your list.

Another thing that will cause you to lose people is when they change email addresses. A good idea would be to have a link that will take your customers to a page that will have them change their email addresses. Make this easy and visible for your customers and you will not lose them when it comes time to use a different email address.

To prevent people from wanting to unsubscribe because they did not receive the type of email they were expecting to receive, make sure that the material on your subscribe link and your website match. When you update the content on your website, maybe the description of your email content on your sign-up form ought to be updated along with it. Follow this advice and you will be assured that your website and your email newsletter content match with fewer disappointed customers.

When people want to unsubscribe, another helpful tactic would be to ask them why they would like to do so. This information will be invaluable to you and help you to gear your emails toward the interests of your customers. If you can do this, more people may choose to remain on your list.

Follow the advice above and you will be less likely to annoy your email list. Then, they will be less likely to accuse you of spamming them!
